Here's our list of the best free stuff apps to start using today for all of your downsizing, renovating, moving, or reorganizing needs.
1. Listia
Listia is a community-based trading app that uses points. You list the items that you want to get rid of and when someone wants them, the will bid on them with points. Highest bidder wins the item and you’ll get the points. You can then use the points to bid on items you might want, or you can redeem them for gift cards. Keep in mind that it is the responsibility of the person who lists the item to arrange a pickup or ships the item directly to the highest bidder. Shipping can be the most challenging part of the exchange, so I try to keep it as local as possible.
2. Freecycle
The goal of Freecycle is to give away the items you no longer need. It keeps these items out of landfills and gets them into the hands of someone who can use them. Every things listed on this app is free — no money or points exchanged. The nice thing about Freecycle is that you can keep it focused on your local area, making handing off or picking up items rather easy.
3. Craigslist
Craigslist has been around for quite some time and has become quite the popular platform. While most things are listed for sale, you CAN find free items listed. It too is regionally based, but that’s a good thing for an easy hand-off. I’ve used it for a few things, but cautiously as scams can happen, so make sure you give it the sniff test…if it smells fishy, move on.
4. Freegle
Freegle helps you declutter, but keep those things out of the landfill. People post what they have to get rid of and some post what they are looking for. The goal is to connect people and give items a new life in a new home. Its user-friendly and community based — everything is free. You might make some new friends in the process.
5. 5miles
The 5miles name gives a nod to how the exchange works. It's free to list items for sale and offer goods and services, all within 5 miles. Because it’s so local, it’s also a great source for giving stuff away, which is something you’ll see quite regularly. It creates an atmosphere where neighbors can help neighbors. It does feature an auction section called 5miles Dash if you want to shop beyond your local area.
6. OfferUp
The OfferUp App allows folks to buy, sell, or give away free items within a set location. You can opt for a local meet up or even ship to individuals. Some of you may recall LetGo — it was acquired by OfferUp and so you get the best of both now. In my opinion it’s very user friendly app and does exactly what you need it to.
7. Facebook Marketplace
Don’t overlook Facebook and the Facebook Marketplace! It’s become a great place to buy or sell, but it’s also easy to find folks just giving things away. Just run a search for what you’re looking for with the word “free” in front of it. Even if you’re not sure about the Marketplace part of it, just sharing with your personal connections can help you purge or pick up what you need.
8. Nextdoor
Nextdoor is an app known for connecting neighbors and helping them communicate about things going on in their neighborhood. It’s also become a great way to give stuff away. Gone are the days of sticking it out on the curb with a “free” sign, now you can just see if you have a neighbor that can make use of what you want to get rid of. If you’re in need of something, a quick ask might find one close by that they’re willing to part with. Even if you’re not looking to exchange things, this is a great app for connecting with the neighbors.
9. Freeya
The Freeya app was created to make the logistics of giving and getting of free items extremely easy. You can set it to keep your exchanges local to your community. It encourages photos of the items so that you can see what you’re getting. Freeya truly simplifies the process — makes it seamless and stress-free, which is exactly what I need when I’m purging and cleaning!
10. Trash Nothing
Trash Nothing fosters and encourages the three R's (Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle) by making it easy for people to give away their unwanted but reusable items to people who can use them. Everything is always free with no strings attached. Do note that it integrates with some of these other platforms, making it quite an extensive tool.
11. Freebie Alerts
Freebie Alerts is an app that brings together some of these other platforms like OfferUp, Nextdoor, and Craigslist. The theory is that you won’t have to check them all for the items you are looking for, but rather, just this one. And it of course alerts you when something you are searching for is listed. I find that I’m naturally more connected on some of the others, so I haven’t really embraced this one as much as I thought I would. I do like that you don’t need a login on it…you can just browse.
12. TradeMade
TradeMade focuses specifically on trading. You can list items or services that you "have" and specify items or services you "need," facilitating trades without the use of money. It does make you think outside the box and consider how you can meet your needs without spending.
Free Stuff Apps for Food & Groceries
