Score Huge Savings at a Target Salvage Store: 50-90% Off Retail!

Why pay full retail price when you can score items for up to 90% off? Here's how to maximize your savings by shopping at Target salvage store locations.

Target salvage store

Everyone loves shopping for a good store clearance section or aisle. After all, those clearance sections offer the best opportunities to save big on anything from groceries and medicine to kids' toys and household items.

But what happens to the clearance items that don't sell in-store? Where do they go? Well, they go to salvage stores, which collect salvaged items from many major retailers, like Target, and then re-sell them for up to 50-90% off retail.

Plus, when customers return items, rather than re-shelving them, many retailers will just ship the products to a liquidation vendor to resell in bulk, like what Amazon does with their Amazon return pallets

I visited a liquidation store in Miami, Florida to see how it all works and picked up insider tips to make shopping easier especially when it comes to finding Target items. I also learned the best times to score liquidation bargains.

What is a Target Salvage Store Anyway?

Target salvage stores aren't actually in or really even part of Target. The clearance, returns, and overstock items are sold through salvage and liquidation chains, many of which also carry Amazon returns or unsold Walmart merchandise.

So when Target items don’t sell during clearance markdowns, they are shipped to salvage stores (sometimes called liquidation, discount, or bin stores) often up to 90% off!

Unlike traditional clearance aisles inside Target, salvage stores carry a constantly rotating different inventory. One week you might find bedding sets and baby gear, beauty and makeup , kids toys while the next could be furniture, or small appliances.  Sometimes they also have indoor and outdoor furniture, bedding, rugs, wall art, and other household items for way less than retail price.

My Tips to Make Shopping Easier Especially When It Comes to Finding Target Items

Target salvage store locations already offer such a heavy discount, that it can be hard to imagine that there's a way to save even more. But, there is. Here are some things to keep in mind when shopping at a Target salvage store to save even more money.

Look at the tags

Sometimes the listed Target markdown price is less than the salvage store price. Be sure to check both before heading to the register to make sure you're not being overcharged.

Keep an eye out for daily deals and promotions

Target is only store with special sales and deals! Stores that sell salvaged items often also have their own daily deals, like $1 bins on Fridays or 20% off the entire store on weekends. Keep an eye on your local store deals and shop the sales then to get the most bang for your buck.

Shop right after a major in-store clearance sale

Usually after a holiday or season, Target (and most major retailers) will have a major in-store clearance aisle or section to get rid of any last unsold products. When those products don't sell, they get moved to a salvage store.

Check social media especially Facebook Marketplace

One of the best ways that I’ve found Target salvage stores is through Facebook marketplace. Do a search for "Target salvage store", "Target liquidation", "Target overstock" and "Target clearance items" and set the search radius around your city or ZIP code to see local posts. Once your results are listed save your search so Facebook notifies you when new posts match your keywords. This helps you catch new liquidation items quickly.

Return policies

Items purchased from salvage stores are not covered by Target’s standard return policy, which allows up to 365 days for returns. Instead, your purchases fall under the liquidation store’s policy, which is usually much shorter.

How Target markdowns work

To score the most savings, it is helpful first to understand how Target's markdown process works. While it may seem like a product goes straight from full price to clearance, there's actually a phase-down process where Target reduces the price by a certain percentage at a time.

  • 30% off: Products sold at full retail price will first be reduced to 30%, usually following the change of a major season, like summer, or right after a major holiday, like Christmas.
  • 50% off: Products that remain unsold at the 30% discount after a couple of weeks will then be reduced to 50% off.
  • 70% off: Products that are still unsold at the 50% discount a couple of weeks after that, will be marked down to their lowest in-store clearance discount of 70% off.
  • 70-90% off: Unsold products from the 70% off clearance category are then shipped from the Target overstock warehouse and collected by Target salvage stores to be sold at up to 90% off.

Ask store staff what days shipments come in so you can plan your visit around fresh inventory.

Can You Shop Target Liquidation Store Online?

Yes and No :)  Target doesn't have a dedicated liquidation category on their site.  However, there are lots of individual resellers that sell Target overstock and clearance items online, usually via eBay.  One of the best sellers I’ve personally found is Best Liquidation. They’ve have fast shipping with 99% positive feedback and over 117K items sold. Currently they only have 4 Target items listed but I have seen everything from coffee makers, toaster ovens, bath towels and electric toothbrushes. You can also simply search eBay for the Target item you want and see which sellers currently have it available.

I have also heard others using Liquidation.com and BStock.com but I haven't.
