I bought a similar phone and plan last year from QVC for my son. You have up to a year to activate the phone and service and the service plan it comes with is good for a whole year. The call/text/data plan ALONE is a $125 value (look on Tracfones website to see for yourself). To preserve that free data it comes with we just use wifi when home or wherever its available (most places have wifi these days!). QVC runs this promotion about once a year.
