Getting In Shape on the Cheap

By Heather Levin

Yep, 2009 is shaping up to be the year that frugality became trendy.  Things like designer handbags and closets just for your shoe collection will soon be passé, while things like budgeting and thrift store shopping will be all the rage.

If you’ve jumped on the frugality bandwagon (either by choice or necessity), you might be wondering how you can apply this to your exercise routine.  Gym memberships can be a big financial drain, and while getting and staying in shape is worth it, is it possible to do it at home for free?

Well, you’ll be thrilled to know that you don’t have to join a gym to get in shape.  There are plenty of ways to work out at home, if you’ve got the discipline to stick to a schedule.

It Pays To Get In Shape

There are plenty of reasons why it’s worth the time and energy to get in shape.

For instance, you might be worried about keeping your job right now.  What does this have to do with exercise?  Well, people who exercise regularly have more energy and are usually more productive with their time.  They’re more alert during the day, and able to keep up with a demanding schedule.

If you’re looking for ways to impress your boss, then getting in shape is a good first start.  You’ll be more prepared to take on additional projects or stay late if you have to, and this extra effort will definitely make you stand out.

Getting in shape also means that you’ll sleep better and be less likely to get sick, two more things that will pay off for your 9-5 life.

So, are you convinced?  Good.  Here are some frugal workout tips that will help get you started…

The Frugal At-Home Workout

  1. Visit the Library For Free Workout Videos

Yep, the library is a veritable treasure-trove of good, free information.  You can check out workout videos and exercise books, and create your own routine for free.  And, don’t forget the Internet; there are tons of sites that offer free, streaming workout videos you can watch and learn from.

  1. Use the Weights You Have At Home

Wait, you’re thinking, I don’t have any weights.  Really?  What about that 5 lb. jug of laundry detergent in the basement?  What about those gallon jugs of water, or those giant cans of soup?

When you stop and think about it, you’ve got weights all over your house.  Heck, even your kids could be used as weights (and, they’ve probably have a blast getting picked up and put down all the time!).   Before you rush out to spend money on free weights, keep an open mind and look at what you’ve already got lying around.

  1. Go For A Walk…In the Mall

If the wind is howling and the sidewalks are snowy, then head to the local mall for some speed-walking.  It’s warm and comfortable in there.  But, leave your wallet in the car to stave off temptation.

  1. Use Your Local School

Your local high school might have an indoor pool or track that you could use.  Many schools have adult swims for $1 or open track times, and this can be a great resource to vary your workouts.

  1. Get Some Basic Equipment

By having just a few pieces of equipment on-hand, you can get an incredibly thorough workout.  And you’ll be happy to know that these pieces are very inexpensive, especially if you find them used (check Craigslist) or on sale.  Most discount stores will also have great deals on these items. You can consider purchasing a jump rope, resistance bands (they’re also called stretch bands), and an exercise ball.

Most libraries will have books that will show you exercises you can do at home with these basic pieces of equipment, and once you’ve made the investment they’re yours for life.

As you can see, working out at home is easy and doesn’t have to drain the bank.  Sticking to a routine will probably be the most challenging aspect.  But try to work in exercise in everything you do.  Even cleaning house can be a great workout if you put some energy into it!
